As a Boise family photographer, I love extended family sessions because they’re full of connection and a whole lot of personality! Having your adult children all together under one roof is truly a testament to the love they grew up with. Grandkids bring out a side in grandparents that only they can- playful, lighthearted, and so many giggles. Yes, everyone wants that "Christmas card photo" but its the moments that happen in between the “everyone look at the camera” shots that melt my heart the most.

Sessions like this aren’t just about documenting what your family looks like right now—they’re about capturing relationships. The way a grandchild reaches for a grandparent’s hand. The pride in a grandparent’s smile. The joy of generations together in one frame. If you’re considering an extended family session in the Boise or Treasure Valley area, know this: it doesn’t have to be perfect. Kids don’t have to “behave.” Grandparents don’t need to pose. All that’s required is showing up together.

One of the best parts of an extended family photo session is that each individual family unit gets their own time in front of the camera. While the full group photos are always meaningful, I make sure to create space for grandparents with each set of grandkids, siblings together, and each immediate family to have their own “mini session” within the larger shoot. This allows everyone to walk away with images that feel personal and intentional—photos that work beautifully for holiday cards, framed prints, or albums in their own homes.

Extended family sessions are more than just photos—they’re a chance to slow down and honor the season you’re in together. Life moves quickly, kids grow faster than we expect, and gathering multiple generations in one place doesn’t happen as often as we think it will. Booking an extended family session allows you to preserve these relationships right now—the laughter, the connections, and the love shared across generations. If you’ve ever thought, “We should really get photos with everyone,” this is your sign. Whether you’re celebrating a holiday, a milestone, or simply togetherness, an extended family session is a meaningful way to create images your family will treasure for years to come.
