So you scrolled Google and found the best family photographer in Boise, you've booked your session, and now you're wondering what you need to bring. I promise you, this will be the only list you'll need to prepare yourself for a family photoshoot (given that your photographer is lighthearted and fun). I'm going to keep it short and sweet because most of these do not need an explanation.

FED CHILDREN

Hungry kids are not happy kids. Actually, hungry moms and dads aren't happy either so just make sure everyone has a happy belly. That may mean snacks in the car on the way to the session and then getting the kids dressed when you arrive at the location. Do what you gotta do. Some kids get really hungry during sessions. Bring snacks! Avoid squeeze pouches and chocolate. Water is a necessity as well.

LIGHTHEARTED ENERGY

The very worst thing you can do is arrive to a session having yelled and threatened everyone in the car that if they don't behave or smile, they won't (insert consequence)... Do your best to relax. Understand what stage of life your kids are in and embrace it. Show up ready to play and don't sweat the small things. Keep discipline at a minimum leading up to your session and especially during your session.

BRIBES

Look, I'm not above a bribe. Some times you can do everything possible and your kiddo just refuses to participate. A lollipop, a treat on the way home, a sticker. Whatever it is, just be sure to follow through on your end if they hold up their end of the deal.

AN ENGAGED DAD

Photographers can deal with attitudes from kids, but please don't bring a grumpy dad. There isn't much worse than that. Give him a heads up about the type of session you and your photographer are envisioning. If you want beautiful images of reflecting the connection your family has, a stiff posed shoot isn't the goal. Let dad know what to expect. Playful, engaged dads are always welcomed here.

APPROPRIATE EXPECTATIONS

Check your expectations continually. Are they too high? Are they unrealistic? Know that the way your children behave at home, is a very good indicator of how they'll behave during a session. During a session isn't the right time to address their typical behavior so lean in, engage with them and just have fun! Touching on the point above, stiff/highly posed sessions do not reflection the connection your family has. Don't prep your kids with saying "Let me see your smile!" prior to a session. Trust me, we can get those natural smiles with play and tickles. Focusing on play minimizes unruly behaviors.
